The Death of a Hero

After some time thinking, I have come to the conclusion that the death of a hero is the most tragic thing that could happen in a story. This device is most effective in stories with many characters, for reason I will elaborate upon a little later.

The death of a hero means an immediate halt to what the hero stood for. So what does a hero stand for? Hope, good and all that is just in the world. That is why their death is one of the most tragic events that could occur. Without one of the aforementioned elements of hope, goodness, or justice, you end up with stagnation where the only release is death. (Quite ironic if you think about it.)

In a story with many characters, only the loss with the death of one character is the loss of what that character stood for. Generally, another character will manifest the continuance of these qualities. This allows for a continuance of the deceased hero's ambitions and therefore allows for a hero to "live in death."

This lead me to my final point, the death of a hero is the event where "rebirth" occurs for other character by manifesting new qualities that were not apparent before. I truly believe that this is what a "phoenix rising form the ashes" is also meant to signify.
